Bathe the Cat

One of those perfectly flawless picture books which harmonises text and illustrations in a joyful, synchronised two-step. Grandma is on her way over. And so, Daddy gathers the family together and gives instructions- Bobby must rock the baby, Dad will scrub the dishes, Sarah will feed the fishes... and he will bathe the cat. And all the tasks will be spelt out clearly on the fridge magnets, with no letter-scrambling interference whatsoever from the bath-hating, nimble-pawed kitty. None at all.

An absolute triumph. Robert's exquisite illustration are pared down here to a minimal fluorescent palette of oranges, pinks and yellows; bold geometric patternings settle over Daddy's shirt, Dad's cornrow styling and dashing, pineapple-retro crockery. There is so much detail to relish: lurid orange nail varnish; the wedding bands which make Dad and Daddy's relationship unambiguous; the art deco cat shampoo bottle. Above all, this beautiful piece of art celebrates family life with two fathers through tons of play, flamboyant rhythms and rhymes and merry mayhem. And, rising above all of them, is a thoroughly ingenious tabby cat. Domestic bliss in technicolour. (nb: all in this family of 5, bar one, are characters of colour). Age 4-7, Hardback 39pp
