Out of the Blue

by Robert Tregoning
illustrated by Stef Murphy

Ref: 17201

In a world saturated by blue and governed by blue-only laws which confine rainbow colours to the technicolour trash, one little boy keeps his love of yellow a secret. Ashamed and afraid, he stashes his yellow prizes (rubber duck, submarine, yellow tights!) in the closet, only opening the doors at night to release his treasures. And then, one night, his dad walks in on this whirling yellow glow. The child is terrified. But his Dad surprises him. "Could loving yellow be ok"? Drawing on his own experience of growing up in the 1990s, under Section 28, the author says, "It often felt like the world I was living in wasn't designed for me to fit in to it and that I had to hide parts of myself to be accepted. The colour law in Out of the Blue and the boy's secret love of yellow are a way of visualising those feelings" (Picture Book Perfect blog 23/2/23). (Single parent family/Dad.) Age 4-7, Paperback 31pp
