by Sarah S. Brannen
illustrated by Lucia Soto
Bobby is Chloe's favourite uncle. He knows the names of all the stars and he's taken her right to the top of a lighthouse. But, at their first family picnic that summer, Bobby has an announcement to make: he and Jamie are getting married. Married! Moving in together! How can Chloe be sure her and Uncle Bobby can still have fun together? Can Jamie bring anything to the table? A delightful little story about a child learning to adjust to change which also centres a same-sex wedding. Lovely end pages dotted with rainbow flags, glitter balls and wedding iconography.
For those of us who can remember the original (now out of print) 2008 Uncle Bobby's Wedding starring a cast of..guinea pigs...and for those of us who feel a little tired of quite how often picture books resort to anthropomorphism when portraying same-sex couples, this 2021 version is a very welcome update! Author Brennen has tweaked her original text and Soto's cartoon-esque illustrations have brought in a vibrant and an entirely human cast. (Bobby is White and Jamie is a person of colour; the protagonist is also mixed race). Age 4-7, Paperback 24pp
