illustrated by Emily Hughes
Four stories following the daily life of a (mixed race) family, Mam and Tad and Beti and Baby Jac, in rural Wales, snuggled in their special wee round house, in lush wild woods, overseen by mountains. Their little goat, Naughty, provides milk; the stream is the ‘fridge’, the horses are fed with home made hay. Beti’s three best friends are all close by and, with them, she celebrates her birthday, fetches water from their stream and goes berry-picking. Set within a wider, self-sufficient, community free of technology.
A gentle narrative steered by a soothing rhythm, as each chapter opens with the same refrain and then follows the seasons per chapter, from spring to winter. Joined with Emily Hughes’ distinctive, soft nostalgic illustrations and wrapped in to an attractive hardback format. Inspired by the author’s own ‘round house’ in Wales, having moved there from Nigeria. ‘A lovely, gentle, unusual tale. Imagine a goat for a pet. How lovely!’ (Meryl, EY Consultant & Trainer); ‘This is a joyous book…a descriptive delight. The illustrations are just right’ (Eileen, Former Primary Teacher- Letterbox Library reviewers). [UK-Nigerian dad, white UK mum]. Age 6-10, Hardback 120pp
