Affirmative portrayals of Disabled characters who have full agency. Most titles portray disability ‘incidentally’ or ‘casually’; the majority are picture books (occasional illustrated early readers) in which the stories are led by protagonists who just so happen to also be disabled. The selection reflects our preference for human (rather than anthropomorphic) portrayals. Throughout Letterbox Library’s website, you will come across books which include Disabled characters but this pack selection is especially focused on Disabled characters in leading roles, who have a strong voice and who steer the narrative. We also work hard to ensure these Disabled book stars are from a range of ethnicities, within different family structures and whose identities are otherwise intersectional.
