Max grabs his grandpa’s hand to rush him back home. Chanukah, the Festival of Light is near! At home, Grandma unwraps the precious menorah, Max lights the first candle and, together with mum, they sing ancient Hebrew songs. The next day we meet Max’s friend, Lara, splashing puddles in a rush to get home so as she can take her turn lighting a candle. Each day introduces a newly lit candle and a new family, each bringing the festival in to their homes through different foods, prayers, traditions and games. Eight nights and eight candles. Finally, on the eighth night, Rabbi Ruben tells the story of Chanukah in the local synagogue (after which we witness two of the children talking about why we should celebrate people’s ‘differences’ - a deft touch). Inside front cover gives more detail on the menorah for those new to this festival. [Other faiths depicted in background via a hijabi woman and a church; includes a Black Jewish family; some minor/background wheelchair user images]. Age 4-7, Paperback 24pp
