by Vincent X. Kirsch
Everyone, but everyone, knows that Archie (a white boy) loves Zack (a Black boy) and everyone, but everyone, knows that Zack loves Archie. And, Archie knows it and, also, Zack knows it. But they just don’t know how to say it. And so, Archie writes a note to Zack- but never delivers it; he feels something is missing. He writes another and another, each building on the first-and never delivers them. Meantime, the two of them are very busy riding a tandem, playing mini golf, drawing great works of art. Can classmates, Zuzella, Zinnia and Zelda hurry the messaging along?
A perfectly sweet portrayal of a first crush, given a timeless spirit through Kirsch’s retro illustrations. ‘What a lovely book about love’ (Kerry, Letterbox Library staff reviewer). ‘Just lovely- sweet, funny, charming and with wonderful illustrations. Some children will accept it entirely at face value, others will be surprised and that may lead to some interesting discussion about who and how we can all love’ (Mark Jennett, Equalities Trainer/Consultant, Letterbox Library reviewer). [Background characters include an ethnically diverse classroom, a girl wearing the hijab, a Jewish child and a wheelchair user]. Age 4-7, Paperback 30pp
