by Viola Wang
“Many years ago, when the world was still young, everything was different. Some small things were big and some big things were small”.
And so begins this story, based on the Chinese goddess of creation myth, in which a tiny child called Nüwa is the only Earth person. Happy in all ways, her joy is spoilt very suddenly one day when she notices that the creatures around her never say, "Hello" back to her. She weeps and weeps for days, until she discovers the magical properties of mud… A tale, simply told, which blazes with a bright solid-colour and fluorescent palette, alongside soft, fuzzy outlines sparked by Wang’s background in printmaking (especially lithography). A lovely backpage double spread shows mud people saying, “Hello!”, in multiple languages and scripts. Age 4-7, Paperback 30pp
