A joyful selection of LGBTQ+-inclusive chapter books suitable for a wide range of reading abilities. This book pack is mainly made up of narratives with LGBTQ+ protagonists. Some have significant LGBTQ+ secondary characters. None of them relegate LGBTQ+ characters to the background. There are books which explore LGBTQ+ (including non binary and trans) identities and relate coming-out narratives, alongside books in which LGBTQ+ representation are ‘incidental’ for eg: a family which just so happens to be headed up by same-sex parents. We are especially pleased with the middle grade offerings from UK publishers now. No longer do more able readers need to rely on YA (Young Adult) fiction for well developed, authentic LGBTQ+ characters. Instead they can be found in younger/KS2 chapter books, either secure in their identities or at an age where they’re navigating early romantic feelings and the pains of those first crushes.
