The 2018 Reflecting Realities report by the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) found that, of the children's books published in 2017: only 4% included BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) characters; only 1% had a BAME protagonist. And yet, 32.1% of pupils of compulsory school age in England are BAME (DfE, 2017). There have now been 6 years of research. Inspired by our work on the CLPE Reflecting Realities Steering Group, this book pack brings you the best in contemporary books which offer authentic and well developed characterisations of people of colour, especially protagonists of colour. There is a deliberate bias towards UK creators and publishers. The pack is co-curated by Letterbox Library and the CLPE. In order to keep the selected books relevant and relatable to your pupils, the pack content is regularly updated.
Please note that we therefore cannot provide you with a list of the books included in the pack. (In the unlikely event we send you titles you already have, we will of course substitute these).
