A long river winds through a lush valley. In the foreground, a girl photographs a riverside beaver.

by Gill Lewis

Cari never wanted to live in this valley. Before, it was her, Mum and Dad, with fish and chips every Friday night in front of the telly. But, then, very suddenly, Dad dies and now Mum wants to start over, away from the city. She has dreams of setting up a riverbank café, which is nowhere close to Cari’s dream. And then, when a flood destroys their new home and work, it just feels like a nightmare. Can a new environmental project aimed at reintroducing beavers to the area galvanize Cari to get involved, to work with her mum, to think outside of their immediate situation?

This is trademark Gill Lewis. A passionate advocate for climate justice, she continues to deliver environmental knowledge and messaging though tightly constructed plots and rich characterisations. This particular book is suitable for all readers within the age group but, published by specialists Barrington Stoke, it is also edited to particularly engage “struggling and reluctant readers”.
