Brown child stands in palm of giant man of colour, next to white red-haired/bearded man . 'A Giant Celebration of Love'.

by Rachel Plummer

Illustrated by Forrest Burdett

“Love is just love, whether GIANT or small

A fold out envelope on the inside cover kick-starts this story: an invite to Sweetlove Hill to celebrate a wedding. The protagonist quickly signs off their RSVP specifying dietary and any extra requirements: “a really, really high chair”. Because this is no ordinary wedding. This is a wedding of TWO GIANTS! Which means huge carnivorous flowers adorning the church, Giant Aunt Clara in a  ten-ton tiara and, of course, two great giants in tuxes, one carrying “fresh morning dew”, the other- “sky that bright stars wandered through”.  A reception, a feast of spiced moonberries and cactus-flower jam follow, rounded off by an earth-quaking dance and a love-is-love message for our protagonist to take back home with them.

A magical tale centering the wedding of two men- celebrated, yes, in the land of giants but resonating loudly with the land of average-sized-humans. Expect fairy tale protagonists, sparkle showers, humming-along rhymes, die cuts and flaps.

‘A fabulous celebration of love, marriage and diversity. Bags of fun, terrific illustrations and lots of surprises. As well as the obvious delight in difference…there’s a more subtle, underlying message here about how the queer world can welcome anyone’ (Mark Jennett, Equalities Trainer/Consultant, LL reviewer). [nb: couple are a white man and a man of colour; lesbian pixies!; protagonist’s gender is ambiguous; single parent/mum family].  Age 4-7, Paperback 20pp
