The narrator’s best friend, David, has flowers in his hair- an entire crown of large, colourful, smudgy stems. And, like a flower, David is sweet, kind and loved by all those around him. But then one day, David comes to school in a hat. It hides a head of bristly twigs. The other children stay away, fearful of his spikiness. But the narrator doesn’t mind the odd scratch and is determined to give David back his colour… A lovely story about the intimate and supportive friendship between two young boys. The event or feeling that causes David to drop his petals isn’t articulated so there is ample room for discussion and for promoting empathy.
‘A delightful story that confronts stereotypes about boys, masculinity and male friendships. The nurturing relationship between the boys is beautiful’ (Mark Jennett, Equalities Trainer/Consultant, Letterbox Library reviewer). [Narrator is a boy of colour; secondary character is a wheelchair user]. Age 4-7, Paperback 29pp
