A Sign-Along Song Book

by Lucy Rogers

Six children playfully introduce the reader to some basic British Sign Language actions before launching in to the ever-popular nursery rhyme, enabling everyone to sign and sing along! Wonderfully diverse illustrations take in children from a range of ethnicities including an East Asian child (who also wears ear defenders), brown children and a child whose mum wears a headscarf. And, of course, disability representation is front and centre: two children wear hearing aids on both ears; one wears a softband (or BAHA headband) and uses a wheelchair; one wears a unicorn-styled (!) eye patch. The children venture out into a night-time grassy hilly landscape, which is recognisably British (complete with owls, robins, moles, bunnies and deer), in order to gaze up at the starry skies and demonstrate their signing actions. Includes a little ‘find out more’ note for young readers at the back.

‘There’s a big focus on BSL-use in schools at the moment.. so I do welcome this. Would be lovely for a nursery/reception to learn a nursery rhyme using BSL’ (Jayne, Primary Inclusion Manager, Letterbox Library Reviewer). ‘Good representation of disabled kids.. there are very few books for this age group using BSL. An early introduction to the idea and to the basic movements of signing’ (June, Disability Activist, Letterbox Library reviewer). Age 3-6, Paperback 19pp
