illustrated by Clara Anganuzzi

Violet has the part of Ariel in the school’s production of The Tempest. But how will she channel a playful sprite when inside she feel so heavy and when her voice is just a whisper? Nan offers snuggles and helps her practise her lines; Uncle Tony and his husband Sebastian offer some theatrical moves; teacher Mr Newman gets her to imagine Ariel’s inner life. Will a few weeks of rehearsals build up her nerve?

A clever book about feelings- the adults around Violet acknowledge her sadness ad anxieties while also gently encouraging her to be brave. We also appreciated a family structure rarely shown in children’s literature- Nan is the primary carer, supported by Violet’s Uncle and his partner. Anganuzzi’s depictions of a range of rounded body shapes draped in many-patterned fabrics are a delight.

‘Lovely story about a girl overcoming her fear with the love and support of her family. I like to see different types of families in books too!’ (Carey, Pre-School Manager, Letterbox Library reviewer). [Family of colour; gay interracial couple]. Age 4-7, Paperback 24pp
